Crip Walk
By KolbOne of the greatest dance moves in the streets is - not the moonwalk, kiddie - but the crip walk. Originated originally in the Compton Ghetto, early '80s, as a ritual to the Crips gang. And I want you to have some knowledge of it. Because, damn, this is repcred.
In Compton, worlds most famous ghetto, the Crips used to make the walk for various occasions. Like when a new member joined the group. Or when one was on the outlook for cops when doing not so legal things, he would then perform the walk as a warning for his fellow gang bro's. The last example sounds very much unlikely, I hear you say. It sounds pretty stupid. I have to agree on that. But lots of high-schools in the USA have banned this dance from the school ground, or even in the near neighborhood of a school. The school thinks students could get hurt or even killed. On the other hand many people say that dancing the Crip walk has prevented teenagers from doing drugs or getting in a gang. So the dance sure has it's reputation.
The C-Walk hit mainstream in the late '80s, when Ice-T performed it on stage, and from then on the saga continues.
Snoop Dogg as a Compton grown-up even defended the dance in his songs. Stating that no-one should perform the dance if they or not a member of the Crips.
First time ever I saw the walk was on the Up In Smoke Tour DVD. Ice Cube performed a superb cross walk. And that's were I got the love from.
